Meloni expresses 'solidarity' with Trump after shooting

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed "solidarity" with Donald Trump on Sunday and called for "dialogue" against violence, following the assassination attempt against the former US president over the weekend, AFP reported.

"I express my solidarity and wishes for a speedy recovery, with the hope that the coming months of electoral campaigning see dialogue and responsibility take the upper hand against hatred and violence," she said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini sparked controversy and ridicule on Sunday by speaking out in an interview on Rai television against "those who sow words of hate against right-wingers, fascists, racists, against Trump, Bolsonaro, Fico or other figures".

"It happened in the USA, it had also happened in Italy to Berlusconi," he added, apparently referring to the late Italian ex-premier's hospital treatment in 2009 after a protester threw a statuette at his face following a rally in Milan.                                                                                                                                                                                                                            The Local

Venice wraps up entry fee pilot scheme

The city of Venice on Sunday ended the test run of its 'tourist tax' scheme charging day-trippers a five-euro entrance fee on busier days.

Officials said they planned to extend the levy and were considering raising the charge to ten euros from 2025, while opponents called the experiment a failure.

Campaigners gathered outside the Santa Lucia train station on Saturday to protest the charge, which they said did not work to dissuade large crowds on peak days and had not improved life for residents.

The ticketing scheme brought in some 2.19 million euros, analysis of city data by news agency AP showed, which was believed to be less than the cost of operating it.

Taylor Swift wows crowds in Milan

More than 160,000 adoring 'Swifties' turned out in Milan over the weekend to see American pop star Taylor Swift perform on her international tour.

In what was Swift's first show in Italy in 13 years, the global megastar performed at Milan's San Siro stadium on Saturday and Sunday night.    The 34-year-old set the crowd in raptures even before she started singing with a greeting of 'ciao' in Italian, Ansa reported.

Celebrities in attendance at the concert included fashion designers Sabato de Sarno and Pierpaolo Piccioli, as well as Ferrari Formula One driver Charles Leclerc.

Italy's Longo Borgini wins women's Giro d'Italia

Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini won the women's Giro d'Italia on Sunday ahead of Belgian Lotte Kopecky after the eighth and final stage.

Longo-Borghini held her 21-second advantage on Kopecky to become the first Italian to win the race since 2008, AFP reported.

The 32-year-old Lidl-Trek rider wore the leader's pink jersey from the first to the final stage.
